A crank cotter must be readjusted or replaced if the crank becomes loose on the axle. Therefore drive the cotter deeper into the crank if this is still possible. If, after this adjustment, the top of the crank otter becomes level with the crank, the threaded part of the crank cotter on the other side of the crank will protrude a great deal from the hole for a large part and the lock nut will no longer be tightened. In this case a new crank cotter will have to be mounted.
