What is Rise?

When we talk about the "Rise" of a handlebar, we mean the vertical distance between the center of the handlebar where it is attached to the stem, and the center of the handlebar where the hands are located. Handlebars are almost never just straight tubes. A handlebar almost always has an ergonomic design to increase comfort. The rise of a handlebar changes the behavior, comfort and your position on the bike and is therefore an important variable. We distinguish 5 sizes of rise. From 0mm rise to 35mm rise. The amount of rise is completely up to everyone's personal preference.

What is backsweep?

The "backsweep" of a handlebar is the amount of horizontal deflection toward the rider. This backsweep is indicated in degrees. Backsweep takes the pressure off your arms by bringing your upper body into a more upright position. The hand-wrist-arm alignment is slightly improved, making the entire position on the bike more comfortable. A backsweep of around 5 degrees is considered a good average for most bikes, but here too, your own preference is the most important.

What is upsweep?

Finally, we have upsweep. By this we mean the vertical bending of the handlebars. The amount of upsweep is indicated in degrees. 4 or 5 degrees is average. The amount of upsweep depends entirely on your own preference. Although, we will give you some information here to help you make a good choice. A large amount of upsweep gives you a feeling of good control over your bike. You become more compact and more "one" with your bike. However, a large amount of upsweep is not always ideal. More pressure is exerted on the outside of your wrists, which may cause some discomfort. So, if you quickly experience problems with your shoulders, arms or wrists, it might be wise to opt for less upsweep.

If you want to calculate it, determine the starting point of the bend. That is the center of the circle. And the centimeters (measured in a straight line) to the end of your handlebars is the radius of the circle. You can calculate the circumference of the circle with 2R. R is the radius. π is 3.1415. Divide circumference by 360 = the number of centimeters per degree of bend.
